This event will feature two panelists from the Public Service sector, Nicole Shimizu, from the Contra Costa County Department of Conservation and Development, and Michael Kent, from the Contra Costa County Hazardous Materials Program! They will share their education, career history, and advice with the audience.

Nicole Shimizu:

Nicole Shimizu (she/her) is a Planner with the Contra Costa County Department of Conservation and Development. Her current role encompasses a wide range of climate and sustainability planning issues including climate resilience, sea level rise, and residential energy efficiency. Collaboration, connection, and communication are cornerstones of the work she does at Contra Costa County which has culminated in the creation of resources such as the Contra Costa County Sustainability Resources webpage and the Sustainability in Contra Costa County newsletter. She graduated in 2020 with a BA in Environmental Studies from UC Santa Barbara.

Michael Kent: 

Michael Kent has been the Ombudsman for the Contra Costa County Hazardous Materials Program for the past 25 years. His job is to respond to questions and concerns about the activities of that program, and to serve as a resource on environmental pollution issues for county residents. In addition, he staffs the County’s Hazardous Materials Commission, an advisory board to the County Board of Supervisors. He also provides support to the Public Health Department on issues such as Environmental Justice, air pollution, asthma and climate change.

Previously, he worked for two non-profit environmental advocacy organizations and was a pollution prevention specialist for the Thurston County Health Department in Olympia, Washington. He received a Bachelor of Philosophy in Interdisciplinary Studies from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and a Masters of Environmental Studies from the Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington.

The Climate Careers Chats are interactive, quarterly events that feature a broad and diverse range of speakers from the California Bay Area and beyond. These free events aim to educate anyone interested in environment-related careers, from students to seasoned professionals. The Climate Careers Chats are produced by Sustainable Contra Costa, Sustainable Leaders In Action, Sustainable Contra Costa’s youth-led team, and are co-hosted by the Contra Costa County Library.
