Join volunteer Master Gardener, Karen Maggio, to learn how to successfully grow winter vegetable crops in Contra Costa County. Discover which vegetable crops grow well in our winter months, when to plant them, and how to solve their common pest problems. Find out why it’s important to fill your vegetable beds over the winter months, and how wintertime cover crops improve soil health and fertility—so you’ll have even greater success for your next summer's vegetable garden.

Karen is a UCCE Master Gardener volunteer, class of 2020, and a Nutrition Education Specialist for UCCE CalFresh Healthy Living. She is currently serving on the executive leadership team for UCCE Contra Costa County Master Gardeners.

Karen spent many years working in higher education as an instructor, senior administrator and campus nutritionist. A career highlight for her was working as a director for the Presidio Trust converting an army base into the Presidio National Park.

She earned an RD (registered dietitian) after completing her graduate work in nutrition at UC Berkeley and an MBA from Saint Mary’s College

She loves to teach, cook, grow her own food and is a beekeeper.
