Growing Traditions: Grow Your Own Three Sisters Garden

10:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Pittsburg

Description

This November, in honor of Native American Heritage Month, we invite you to discover the story and wisdom behind the Three Sisters, corn, beans, and squash. These three crops have been grown together for centuries by many Indigenous communities across North America. When planted together, they support each other’s growth:

  • Corn provides a natural pole for the beans to climb.
  • Beans enrich the soil with nitrogen.
  • Squash spreads along the ground, helping retain moisture and prevent weeds.

Visit our Seed Library this month to pick up a free Three Sisters Seed Kit and start your own traditional companion garden at home! Each kit includes seeds, planting instructions, and background information on the cultural significance of the Three Sisters.
Please take one kit per family. Kits are available while supplies last.

Generously brought to our community thanks to the Friends of the Pittsburg Library and the Seed Libraries of the Contra Costa County Library System. Learn more at https://ccclib.org/seed-librar...
