The first in a stunning new series from the author of The Silence of the Sea , winner of the 2015 Petrona Award for best Scandinavian Crime Novel.

The Legacy is the first installment in a fantastic new series featuring the psychologist Freyja and the police officer Huldar.

The only person who might have the answers to a baffling murder case is the victim's seven-year-old daughter, found hiding in the room where her mother died. And she's not talking.

Newly-promoted, out of his depth, detective Huldar turns to Freyja for her expertise with traumatized young people. Freyja, who distrusts the police in general and Huldar in particular, isn't best pleased. But she's determined to keep little Margret safe.

It may prove tricky. The killer is leaving them strange clues, but can they crack the code? And if they do, will they be next?

I enjoyed reading this for the most part and will for sure read the next 2 of the series at some point. I liked the story and the ending was a surprise for me. I had 2 problems with it. First, there were some long paragraphs and chapters making it difficult for me to find a stopping place. Second, it was just wordy. Ok, I get it. The guy had a tough childhood. Ok, I get it. The apartment is a mess. Ok, I get it. There is pressure on you when you lead an investigation. Just get on with the story!

(The first book in the Children's House series) As with most Scandinavian noir, the reader has to get past the violence to enjoy the mystery. There are very brutal acts involved with this novel, but I still found the secrets to be engrossing. Recommend. Kristi & Abby Tabby

Despite a solid start, I made it to page 258, and at that point decided it was in my best interest to skip to the end, as I found it slow and tedious to read. The premise was engaging, and the characters COULD have been interesting, but were presented in a very 1-dimensional, predictable, and flat way. I did not like how effort/words were devoted to making the characters out to be a certain thing: Margret (disturbed child), Karl (pathetic loser), Elisa (perfect parent/doting wife)...etc.

I can only hope that maybe something was lost in translation along the way? Additionally, the resolution seemed implausible and very random; it left me unfulfilled.

This is the second book I have read by Yrsa Sigurdardottir, after The Silence of the Sea. While the conclusion of The Silence of the Sea was almost as random and illogical as the conclusion of The Legacy, the plot and characters of the latter were more compelling. The plot held my attention all the way though. I would rate the Silence of the Sea 4/5 stars.

I didn't enjoy this as much as other Yrsa Sigurðardóttir mysteries I've read, but the last 3 pages bumped the book from 3.5 stars up to 4 stars. Absolutely loved those 3 pages!
The lead detective (Huldar) and the expert in child trauma (Freyja) were interesting and likeable - as was little Margret who hid in terror under her mother's bed while her mother was murdered. Molly, the dog, was a hoot and should have you smiling.
The Legacy (also called DNA) is the first in the Children's House series but the only one (so far) that has been translated into English. Hoping for more of Huldar and Freya!

Enjoyed the writing and characters. However the ending - the reveal of the killer - did not convince me.
