During the bloodiest battle of WWII, in Okinawa, Desmond Doss saved 75 men without firing or carrying a gun. He was the only American soldier in WWII to fight on the front lines without a weapon, as he believed that while the war was justified, killing was nevertheless wrong. As an army medic, he singlehandedly evacuated the wounded from behind enemy lines, braved fire while tending to soldiers and was wounded by a grenade and hit by snipers. Doss was the first conscientious objector to ever earn the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Great movie based on amazing true story. He is hero not only in the war but also in his no-violence conviction. The fact he even saved a few wounded enemies was amazing. War is bad from every aspects and only causes pain for everybody.

I love watching movies based upon true stories and this one is so well done.

Great movie! Some scenes are a bit gory and descriptive but this is Mel Gibson we're talking about after all.

This is a very entertaining movie, if one doesn't mind the intense and graphic violence which is often such a prominent aspect of movies directed by Mel Gibson. But oddly, the film both understates and overstates the heroism of its subject. In this film historical figure Desmond Doss never does anything wrong, never becomes discouraged, never makes a mistake, and is portrayed as a saintly ideal, with unflagging good will even for people who abuse him. And yet, some of the war-time exploits of the real Doss are actually omitted or simplified, apparently due to the worry that the audience would find them implausible. I would suggest watching the movie as entertainment as long as you keep in mind that what you're seeing is far from documentary-level objectivity.

one of the best war movies ever made....as a fellow C.O. I have first hand experience what it is like to serve and still hold on to your beliefs....while some think Gibson Over-inflated the battle scenes and the trials he went through, on the contrary, they don't come close to what its really like....it's a good view of WAR from the eyes of a man who steadfastly held onto his truths..

A steadfast pacifist determined to serve.
A difficult stance, to bring literally only a brave heart to a gunfight.
A fairy tale-like but dramatically effective depiction of a suspected and reviled coward turned a deeply respected hero.

Mel frequently goes beyond truth and 'normal' when acting or directing. He ruined 'The Passion of Christ' when he traded biblical truth for make-believe. So this story came off as contrived. The battle was filled so thick with smoke that I couldn't tell who was shot or which side was ahead. After the battle the story just ended. Had you returning to your seat with a bucket of popcorn and no film left to wash it down. A 5-star Mel movie is "We Were Soldiers".

Violence: prolonged realistically graphic sequences of war violence including grisly bloody images

Other: The whole issue of war is violent, and so that is why I think it is suitable for over 18 to watch.

Violence: Extreme violence (war sequences) about 1 hour into the movie. Before that, there is some domestic violence and some beating up.

Violence: Gruesome, realistic depictions of battle, death, and Japanese harikari (suicide as an honorable act). Also emotional and physical abuse/beatings of the conscientious objector.

Frightening or Intense Scenes: In addition to a ton of nasty war violence, there is a scene early on of a man's leg graphically injured in an accident. A young man's parents fight; one holds a gun and seems to contemplate turning it on himself. Boys brawl and one is hit with a brick.

Sexual Content: A soldier's naked rear is visible as he lounges in the barracks before being forced to run the obstacle course. Bunkmates rib him about his anatomy. Another man is reading a magazine with a drawing of a topless woman. A married couple kisses passionately.

Violence: Here's where the movie gets the R. I saw it in theaters and had to look away several times. Relentless wide shots of shooting, maiming, and killing during the last half, and numerous close-ups of nasty injuries being treated.

Desmond Doss: With the world so set on tearing itself apart, it don't seem like such a bad thing to me to want to put a little bit of it back together.

Tons of quotes in IMDb already but this one:
I've done everything they asked me, except this one thing, and I'm being treated like a criminal just 'cause I won't kill.
-You tried. Nobody can say you didn't. But who are you going to save in prison?
Probably nobody.
-Then why can't you just pick up the stupid gun and wave it around? You don't have to use it, just meet them halfway.
-I can't do that.
Yes, you can. It's just pride. Pride and stubbornness. Don't confuse your will with the Lord's.
-Have I been prideful?
Maybe I am prideful. But I don't know how I'm going to live with myself if I don't stay true to what I believe. Much less how you could live with me. I'd never be the man that I want to be in your eyes.
-I fell in love with you because you weren't like anyone else and you didn't try to be. Do not think for one moment that you will disappoint me. I will love you no matter what.
