Bragg is a superb writer and story-teller. By the time you finish reading this, you'll feel like you know all the members of his family and have tasted their delectable southern cooking. I've tried only two of the recipes so far, the Wild Plum Pie (p. 353) and the Blackberry Cobbler (p. 354) but my husband claims it's the best cobbler I've ever made. Maybe it's the stick of butter :) Even if you're not a cook, you will enjoy the beautiful writing and taste of the south. Excellent book.

Best. Book. EVER. I loved this book. I laughed my (as they would say) fool head off and found myself drooling more than a few times. About true southern cooking, about being southern, about kinfolk, the meaning of life and the importance of food in our lives - all of it is in this book. If you only read one thing this year, make sure it is this book. I did not want it to end. It could have had a zillion more pages and it would not have been enough. I will buy this book and probably read it at least once a year.

Kindle Immersion Read
I sat in the presence of greatness at Unity Temple in Kansas City, Missouri on April 16, 2019, as Rainy Day Books brought in Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Rick Bragg to speak to a crowd of his fans about his latest publication, 'The Best Cook in the World: Tales from my Momma's Table'

There is a reason the Bragg resonates with people, he is kind, humble, and very talented.
His stories have been the topic of many dinner conversations over the years.

If Rick Bragg writes it, I'm going to read it. If he provides narration, I'm going to listen.

Author Rick Bragg writes about his family's elders in the South, using a voice that is quietly eloquent, lending integrity to the hardscrabble life. This book, about his mother's ability to cook by instinct, had me hooked on page one. Highly recommended !

If you enjoy listening to tales from your elders about the good ole days and trying to recreate food the way grandma made it in the kitchen, this is the book for you. Thoroughly loved it. You can taste and smell the food through the pages. Makes me instantly want to run to the kitchen and make the recipes!
