It's the summer of 1983 in Italy, and Elio, a precocious 17-year-old, spends his days in his family's villa transcribing and playing classical music, reading and flirting with his friend Marzia. One day, Oliver, a charming American scholar arrives as the annual summer intern tasked with helping Elio's father, an eminent professor. Elio and Oliver discover the heady beauty of awakening desire over the course of a summer that will alter their lives forever.

wonderfully told and acted... so real. Who wouldn't want parents like Elio!

This movie was definitely an amazing adaptation of the book. The story captures disquieting youthful obsessions, the tendency to feel absolutely everything, and the self absorbed self conscious fantasies that can take over a young mind in the midst of young love. The amazing acting brought to life the engrossing sensuality of the story.

A coming of age love story? I agree with beckythecat1. “I was uncomfortable with the reactions of the father. He said this was a good experience for his son. What? With so much discussion of older men using power over younger women and men. This was not romantic. It was an older man seducing a young BOY. In Italy this is okay? This is okay as a grad student? The boy was still confused at the end of the film.”

I don't see what the appeal of this film was. The scenery was great, but the story was slow and subject matter a little creepy.

I frankly don't understand why so many people are so ecstatic about this movie. No matter how well-acted, no matter how exquisite the Italian setting, no matter how beautifully shot, no matter how sensual the music, this is still just a story of a mature adult man seducing a teen aged boy. Substitute a teen aged girl for that boy and it's just plain creepy. If the borderline pedophilia doesn't bother you, then let me add that there is an America Pie-style scene with a peach standing in for the apple pie, but is taken to another level of cringe. At least the director of American Pie had the good grace to play it for laughs.

I really cannot say enough on this one. I'll start by stating that, personally, I'm a bit weary of the multitude of special interest pieces in this day and age. I think they're fine, especially if they work, but I tend to find that most just do not. What's really great about Luca Guadagnino's film is that the story and characters are so much better than most LGBT pieces. This is the reason it surpasses special interest groups. I felt satisfied to finally see a good drama that simply happened to be LGBT. I know there's that knee-jerk desire to get socio-political with any minority issue, but a good story is simply a good story. This has some of the best performances of the year, especially Timothee Chalamet and Armie Hammer (my pick for Best Supporting Actor, along with accolades for the film's script and song). The look and feel of the film puts you back into the early 80s better than any of the kitsch works over the years. Having been the age of Chalamet's character at the time, I know this by experiencing. For 2017 (the ACTUAL date of the film), this is a beautiful work that is only surpassed by Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Phantom Thread", I feel.

The movie was long and boring.....lost interest within the first hour....the scenery of northern Italy is just beautiful...kept watching but had to fast forward a few times....

Before viewing the movie I had heard many rave reviews. Unfortunately, I do not agree with most of those rave reviews. I do think the movie was ok but there were several things that bothered me. The most obvious to me was the miscasting of Armie Hammer. His character is supposed to be 24 years old. There is no way he is believable as a 24 year old, not only because of his physical looks, but the dialogue for this character is not that of a 24 year old. The subject matter is interesting but it is extremely slow moving and if you know nothing about the story prior to viewing, one can be a bit confused when the issue of the young boy's attraction to the older character first comes up. I also felt the ending was a bit too contrived. The production values are very good but I can only rate this movie as just ok. I give it 2.5 stars.

I completely lost interest in this movie about 20 minutes into it.
