Review excerpt: "'Sweet Black Waves' by Kristina Perez is a YA retelling of Tristian and Isolde, and while it contains romantic elements, it is not a romance. If you know the story of Tristian and Isolde, then you know it’s not a happy story. I’m not sure what direction Perez is ultimately going to take the legend as this is the first book in a trilogy, but I walked into it knowing enough not to anticipate a HEA.

That said, if you’re interested in books about pre-Christian societies empowered by a matrilineal magic and women tapping into that power, you’ll probably like this book."

This book is so good! If you like books like the Hunger Games and Harry Potter, this is the type of book for you. I wish the second book would come out sooner though.

Even if it weren't a tragedy (and it's not exactly subtle, let me tell you, with Essy singing Etain's ballad and that cursed love spell), the story is just not good enough for a enjoyable read. It's been some sometime since I read a insta-love and I am not a fan of it. I'm not into the weird, mystical mumbo jumbo that Branwen is supposed to have (it's like she's on an acid trip 24/7), not into the self-sacrificial idicoy that she has, and I'm certainly not into a map that serves no navigational purpose.

God, I'm so annoyed right now.

A captivating retelling of star-crossed lovers, Tristan & Eseult, that includes a twist.
