A young boy visits his grandfather, but the visits are quiet and frustrating as the language barrier between them seems insurmountable. That is, until the boy begins drawing. Soon his grandfather joins in , and the two find their common language in art. The story is told mostly through the illustrations, and Dan Santat has merged the boy’s cartoon style with a much more traditional Thai style to create images that go together seamlessly and tell a fun story. This is a beautiful book about finding ways to communicate without words and the bonds between children and their grandfather – and would pair well with other stories about connecting with extended family, like Mango, Abuela and Me by Angela Dominguez and Alma and How She Got Her Name by Juana Martinez-Neal.

A partially wordless tale about the power of words...but also about the power of wordlessness across cultural and generational divides. This is a beautiful story about a boy and his grandfather who find new ways of communicating and understanding one another. The illustrations are perfect: vivid, dynamic, and evokative! The paper itself is thick and luxurious (I love the "floop" sound of good paper pages being turned).

Yes the young and the old can find something in common and bond.

Although sparsely narrated, this beautifully illustrated endeavor weaves a sweeping story about love and its own unique language.

I love this picture book! Not only is the story beautiful but the illustrations are amazing!. Drawn Together connects the generational and language gap between Grandfather and Grandson through the love of drawing. From the beginning you see the two having a hard time connecting with each other until they begin to draw together creating this magical, action-packed world of two different styles that flows beautifully together.

I loved this book. Beautiful illustrations. It shows how you don't always have to speak the same language to be able to communicate with others but rather art, storytelling and actions.

What's wonderful about Drawn Together is how deftly it tells its story with little to no dialogue. Being a nearly wordless story allows it to truly embody the book's overall theme: finding a common language not in words, but in art. Both grandson and grandfather have a unique art style that shows off both the characters' personalities as well as the illustrator's talent. A must read for fans of colorful picture books!

Heartfelt story about a grandson and grandfather finding a connection through art. This does a great job at being able to both honor the differences between traditional and modern, and blending them together to show they don't always have to be separate. Great message that there is more than one way to communicate.

An elegant tale that demonstrates the power of art's universal language to drawn people together when words less than available. Along with its beautiful illustrations, Drawn Together is a timely tale for young and old alike. It's perfect!
