Add a CommentGeneral Lee. I found myself irritated that the author didn’t include the complete sentence of General Grant’s quote on Lee:
“I felt like anything rather than rejoicing at the downfall of a foe who had fought so long and valiantly, and had suffered so much for a cause...”
The rest of the sentence: “... though that cause was, I believe, one of the worst for which a people ever fought, and one for which there was the least excuse.”
I can understand the author NOT including all of Grant’s sentences in his quote (the author chose only certain sentences), but the only reason I can think of as to NOT finish the sentence, is because it is unkind, yet true, about Lee.
I don’t like that the author wants to shape our view of Lee, which makes me wonder about the rest of the book .... what else isn’t he telling us in order to skew the facts?
