This is - loosely - a sequel to his 1980 novel "Timescape" - a Nebula Award winner. Time travel is an intriguing SF theme, but here Benford leaves it to his protagonist try to figure out why he repeatedly dies and returns to the day of his 16th birthday - with memories of each life intact and a growing awareness that other time travelers are also "looping" through the timescape. Cool idea? Yes, but unfortunately Benford enjoys geek-splaining multiple time travel methods way way too much, while the plot goes flat. Some of the historical characters are fun - some just annoying. A disappointment.
I always enjoy a theme that allows for second chances.
