A sweeping novel from renowned author Stephanie Marie Thornton... Alice may be the president's daughter, but she's nobody's darling. As bold as her signature color Alice Blue, the gum-chewing, cigarette-smoking, poker-playing First Daughter discovers that the only way for a woman to stand out in Washington is to make waves--oceans of them. With the canny sophistication of the savviest politician on the Hill, Alice uses her celebrity to her advantage, testing the limits of her power and the seductive thrill of political entanglements. But Washington, DC is rife with heartaches and betrayals, and when Alice falls hard for a smooth-talking congressman it will take everything this rebel has to emerge triumphant and claim her place as an American icon. As Alice soldiers through the devastation of two world wars and brazens out a cutting feud with her famous Roosevelt cousins, it's no wonder everyone in the capital refers to her as the Other Washington Monument--and Alice intends to outlast them all.

I highly recommend this book about a woman way before her time. She was strong and influential before women even had a voice in politics.

Like the commenter before me, I did not know much about Alice Roosevelt and was much surprised about her amazing life. She was another woman who was politically powerful before women were even allowed to vote. Too bad she and Eleanor were not on the same side much sooner! I thought the romance novel aspect of this book was a bit overplayed but enjoyed her nonconformist actions and intelligence enough to outweigh those parts. It is too bad people in that era could not get divorces or be banished from society, so many unhappy people and sham marriages. She suffered a lot of loss and kept going and would have been a stalwart friend to have. Thumbs up!

Alice was a force and I am embarrassed to say I knew almost nothing about her before reading this new novel by Stephanie Marie Thornton. The meticulous research that was so lovingly done by the author gives a story that immerses us in history. Alice was a contemporary and acquaintance to hundreds of historical figures and truly was the other Washington Monument. I think I would like to add her to my "dinner list." An author's note documents a few tweaks made to the narrative that did not conform to historical facts. I appreciate the information so that I can avoid feeding facts to my friends and family that are not 100% accurate.
