A victim of bullying at boarding school, Lady Betsy Wilde now collects marriage proposals to prove her worth. Lord Jeremy Roden is haunted with memories of war that make polite society seem pointless, but when he overhears Betsy’s latest refusal, he advises her to accept the Duke. He begins to second-guess that advice as they spend more time together. After an amusing wager, Jeremy helps Betsy fulfil her deepest wish to attend a male-only function in disguise. Why should women be excluded? Betsy’s family and even her prospective mother-in-law provide unexpected support as she takes this step that could forever ruin her reputation. Great fun and a strong, compassionate portrayal of the challenges experienced by a soldier suffering from PTSD.

It was a decent rom-com and could have been that much more if some of the plotting was just a little tighter BUT the real winner here are the characters which are well done. Jeremy and Boadicea are well matched and interesting. It was better than her last one where the male character was like a table - nothing happened.

“Guilt echoed in the void where his soul used to be, and he upended the glass, pushing away the stab of remorse that had become his hourly companion. The whisky scorched down his throat, though (alas) his mind was clear, and his fingers didn’t have the slightest tremble. / Liquor stopped doing its job long ago, but it turned out to be an excellent shield against polite society. He plucked up the glass again, relishing the way the last few drops burned his tongue.” p. 10
