The truth is... sometimes it's hard to deal with your family! Especially when they don't approve of your relationship with a guy who happens to be trans.

High school freshman Verdad is at a new school but keeps everyone at a distance, with only the ghost of her best friend to keep her company in the empty desk next to her in every class. But she is intrigued by another new kid, Danny, and might actually want to get to know him/her/them (?). A lot of the details in the story are gradually revealed, so I don’t want to give anything away. The story covers a lot of ground about grief and loss, lgbtq+, race, gun violence, school, friendship, romance and family relationships. Though I sometimes found the story itself hard to follow, the growth in latinx/black/questioning Verdad as a person, and her acknowledgment of how even she as a marginalized person possesses her own internal racism, homophobia and transphobia, touched me from beginning to end and made it worth the read. Her ongoing internal dialog about her own bigotry is a good reminder to us all to continually challenge our prejudices, because EVERYONE has prejudice. And it’s available as an E-Book!
