Add a QuoteOscar Shapeley (to Ellie Andrews): "Hi, sister. All alone? My name's Shapeley. Might as well get acquainted; it's gonna be a long trip -- gets tiresome later on, especially for somebody like you. You look like you've got class... Yes-sir... with a capital 'K'! And I'm the guy that knows class when he sees it! Believe you me! Ask any of the boys -- they'll tell ya: Shapeley sure knows how to pick 'em... Yes-sir! Shapeley's the name, and that's the way I like 'em! You made no mistake sittin' next to me; just between us, the kinda mugs you meet on a hop like this ain't nothin' to write home to the wife about. You gotta be awful careful who you hit it up with, is what I always say, and you can't be too particular neither."
Oscar Shapeley: "What's the matter, sister? You ain't sayin' much." Ellie Andrews: "It seems to me you're doing excellently without any assistance!" Oscar Shapeley: "Ha, ha, ha, ha! There's pretty good! 'It seems to me you're doing excellently without any assistance'! Well shut my big nasty mouth!"
Oscar Shapeley: "You know, there's nothin' I like better than to meet a high-class mama that can snap 'em back at cha. 'Cause the colder they are -- the hotter they get! That's what I always say. Yes-sir... when a cold mama gets hot, boyyy, how she sizzles. Heh, heh, heh, heh. Now, you're just my type! Believe me sister, I could go for you in a BIG way. 'Fun-on-the-side' Shapeley they call me, with accent on the fun, believe you me." Ellie Andrews: "Believe you me, you bore me to distraction!"
"I never did like the idea of sitting on newspapers. I did it once, and all the headlines came off on my white pants. On the level! It actually happened. Nobody bought a paper that day. They just followed me around over town and read the news on the seat of my pants." -- Peter Warne

Comment
Add a CommentIt would be interesting to see a list of what movies were up against this one when it swept the Oscars because quite honestly I don't really see the appeal of it. I like Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert was good but I didn't really care for this film at all. It had some funny moments like when he was carrying her across the stream but for the most part it bored me. I had DVR'd this off of TCM and tried to watch it more than once but I always ended up falling asleep or getting bored an changing the channel. I finally watched the whole thing and the ending, although I get the jest of it, had me shaking my head in annoyance and confusion. Apparently the last time I watched this was in 2007 and the only part I remembered was the one that is featured on the promo picture from the movie with Ellie and Peter in their pajamas. I just realized that the plot of an heiress running away is similar to that of another movie, Roman Holiday, but Roman Holiday is a MUCH better movie with better acting and a better storyline. Bottom line is that "It Happened One Night" can only aspire to be as wonderful as "Roman Holiday."
Director Frank Capra's screwball early comedy from the pre-code era. An heiress runs away from her family, and hides with a snarky reporter who is secretly in need of a leading story. Clever dialogue, great chemistry & playful acting.
It Happened One Night swept the 1934 Academy Awards, winning Best Picture, Actor, Actress, and Director.
GREAT 1934 - pre-Code romantic comedy film with elements of screwball comedy directed and co-produced by Frank Capra which won 5 Academy Awards. Very enjoyable performances by both Claudette Colbert and Clark Gable.
The hitchhiking scene WAS rather amusing.
I resisted seeing this for God only knows what reason, but was delighted when I did. The chemistry between Gable and Colbert is wonderful and the hitchhike scene is fabulous! Having seen Gable only in dramas, this movie showed a side of him I'd never seen. He had a real comic gift.
Charming 'screwball' romantic comedy from the days when they relied on acting instead of sex to carry films. Highly enjoyable for just about any adult but not really recommended for teens or children as nothing blows up - they'll be bored! Wonder whether Cary Grant could have made it even more enjoyable and perhaps Myrna Loy? But that is just wondering as it is pretty darn good the way it is!
I watched this movie as an original as well as its remake in other languages. Its an awesome movie. I loved it.
Hands down one of the best romantic comedies out there! Gable and Colbert have sizzling chemistry and great banter.
ah Clark Gable... swoon
One of my favorite movies of all time! You can't help but be charmed by Clark Gable.
A good period comedy. Well acted, and directed. Not the sophisticated romantic comedies of today, but an enduring time tested classic, showcasing some of Hollywood's best stars of yesterday. Time well wasted.
