From a helicopter high above the empty California desert, a man is sent free-falling into the night…. In Chicago, a woman learns that an elite team of ex--army investigators is being hunted down one by one.... And on the streets of Portland, Jack Reacher--soldier, cop, hero--is pulled out of his wandering life by a code that few other people could understand. From the first shocking scenes in Lee Child's explosive new novel, Jack Reacher is plunged like a knife into the heart of a conspiracy that is killing old friends…and is on its way to something even worse.

A decade postmilitary, Reacher has an ATM card and the clothes on his back--no phone, no ties, and no address. But now a woman from his old unit has done the impossible. From Chicago, Frances Neagley finds Reacher, using a signal only the eight members of their elite team of army investigators would know. She tells him a terrifying story--about the brutal death of a man they both served with. Soon Reacher is reuniting with the survivors of his old team, scrambling to raise the living, bury the dead, and connect the dots in a mystery that is growing darker by the day. The deeper they dig, the more they don't know: about two other comrades who have suddenly gone missing--and a trail that leads into the neon of Vegas and the darkness of international terrorism.

For now, Reacher can only react. To every sound. Every suspicion. Every scent and every moment. Then Reacher will trust the people he once trusted with his life--and take this thing all the way to the end. Because in a world of bad luck and trouble, when someone targets Jack Reacher and his team, they'd better be ready for what comes right back at them…

This one is slightly different with Reacher working with other people instead of getting things done by himself. It’s fast paced and entertaining.

In this book you come to know Jack Reacher better through an introduction to his friends. They reunite to solve a crime that concerns their former Military Police squad "The Special Investigators". The situation gives Reacher a chance to reflect on his chosen path in life through comparison to those of the people with whom he once worked. His observations result in personal reflection and soul-searching that gives readers a deeper understanding of the vulnerable side of Reacher's strong character. In contrast, as Reacher was the leader of his squad, we also see him in a command position and sense the respect and admiration his fellow soldiers had for him. As usual, Child has crafted a highly entertaining story that is hard to put down.

Book #18 chronologically after The Hard Way (2006) and before Nothing to Lose (2008):

One of the few books where Reacher works with a team. For ace investigators they seem very inept never figuring out the rather obvious tie in to the LA cops until 2 of the team get taken-. The ending is pure Hollywood fantasy with a lot of violence -like James Bond no-one seems to be able to just shoot someone without a bunch of chases, fights, dumb decisions and screaming. Child writes screenplays and we will eventually see all of these scenarios played by an unbelievable midget version of Reacher.

Like all of Lee Child's books, the plot and character are not the least bit believable.
At the point where a character takes on a murderous crew with no plan in mind and no hope of survival, I'd toss any book.

I always enjoy the Jack Reacher novels. There's lots of action and not too much character rumination like with some mysteries. I'm hooked on this series! Lee Child is a good writer.

This is a true blue Jack Reacher Book. As always there is a lot of violence which I don't usually appreciate; however, Child makes it all about loyalty, patriotism, and other healthy attitudes making the violence almost justifiable. Jack Reacher, and three of his buddies take on a ring of "bad guys," to avenge the death of their other partners from the m.Pand make for a most interesting read.

In this book, Reacher has the help of 2 women MPs and 1 male MP to help him find out the how, why, and who when 2 other of their past MP mates go missing. It takes a good while for this bunch to find the clues and then put the pieces in order so that they can extract revenge/right the wrongs. Finally, at the end, the action builds. The helicopter scene is the most chilling, but the night attack on the electronic factory with the molotov cocktails is the most thrilling. I also liked Reacher's fascination with numbers and how the team uses that to talk in code to each other. Another well thought out action story. This one ties into current events that suggest that terrorists could use dreadful weapons against US cities/population.

Neagley: You have to do something.
Reacher: I will do something. Believe it. There are dead men walking, as of right now. You don't throw my friends out of helicopters and live to tell the tale.
