Two grandfathers sit on a front porch and reminisce about the blizzard of 1888, when they were both snowed in, but in very different circumstances. Outgoing Grandpa Walt is caught in a barn, alone except for the animals, and shy Grandpa Fred is trapped at an inn, surrounded by people. The real attraction in Terrible Storm is the clever parallel storytelling - each page is split horizontally across the middle so that readers can follow the perspectives of both grandpas at the same time, comparing and contrasting not only the differences in the grandpas' surroundings, but also in their attitudes as they wait to dig themselves out of the snow.
