"Powerful and moving." - Booklist, starred.

Blaze is the story of Clayton Blaisdell, Jr. - known as Blaze - and of the crimes committed by him and against him. Blaze has been mentally challenged since childhood when his father threw him down the stairs. After escaping an abusive detention center for boys, he hooks up with George, a seasoned criminal, and enters a life of scams and robberies. When George is killed and Blaze is left on his own, he becomes one of the most sympathetic criminals in all of literature. Blaze is a crime story of amazing strength and sadness, shot through with a current of edge-of-the-seat suspense. No Stephen King - or Richard Bachman - fan should miss this gripping, unforgettable story.

If you're a fan of Stephen King, you'll appreciate the pacing, the well-developed characters, and the moments of emotional, gut-wrenching violence that King can write so deftly. But you will also appreciate that it isn't a straight-forward paranormal, monster vs. man horror story. It is a study of a badly damaged human, his loyalty, his desire to go through with a plan even if its doomed from the start. It's an emotional roller coaster of a story that I highly recommend.

In the foreward by Stephen King, he indicates this was not his greatest novel. I actually tend to disagree. Though the story was one of his shorter ones, I truly enjoyed it. the setting was well done. The main character is an endearing sort despite all his misgivings. I was grossed out in parts as I expect from the King of Horror, to my pleasure (he never disappoints there). As usually the story is set out so vividly it's nearly like watching it on screen.
I had plenty of laughs reading it. I am only sorry it took me so long to find this old treasure.
