He grinned that huge, cheek-stretching grin, and I couldn't help grinning back, though my smile was more rueful than delighted. He was supposed to be my enemy. He was probably insane. And he *was* my friend. Not that he wouldn't kill me if things turned out that way, but he wouldn't like doing it. With humans, what more could you ask of a friend?

Jeb: That's a real interesting name you've got there. Maybe sometime you'll tell me how you got it. Bet that's a good story. But it's kind of a mouthful, don't you think? Wanderer?
[a brief pause; Wanderer makes no reply]
Jeb: Mind if I call you Wanda, for short? It flows easier.
[Wandered, now Wanda, shrugs]
Jeb: Okay then, Wanda. It's nice to have a handle on you. Makes me feel like we're old friends.
"You are the noblest, purest creature I've ever met. The universe would be a darker place without you."
It's not the face, but the expressions on it. It's not the voice, but what you say. It's not how you look in that body but the things you do with it. YOU are beautiful.
SummaryAdd a Summary
In the future Earth has been taken over by a unique alien species. The infiltration was slow and undetected until it was too late. Now these aliens, known as Souls, live inside human bodies, which act as hosts for the invading parasites. Usually when a Soul is placed in a new host it is able to take full control of the body, pushing aside any remnant of the human consciousness that once lived inside.
After a Soul named Wanderer is inserted into her new host she soon realizes something isn't right. It seems the human who once inhabited this body refuses to give in and die. Melanie Stryder wants no part of Wanderer and is doing everything she can to fight back. Even though Wanderer controls the body, nothing she does is able to quench Melanie's spirit. She is always there, in her head, so to speak.
As time goes by Melanie's memories become Wanderer's and soon she finds herself longing for the people that meant so much to her host. Melanie left behind her brother and the man she loves, and now Wanderer has developed those same feelings. Soon Wanderer and Melanie begin working together to track down Melanie's loved ones, all the while being careful that they don't lead the other Souls to the humans who are in hiding. When they finally do find them, they must figure out a way to live peacefully with a group of humans who have grown to hate Souls. Emotions flare and relationships are tested in agonizing ways as two lives must share one body and as enemies must learn to co-exist and survive.
The Soul known as wanderer is given the task of trying to find the whereabouts of the human resistance, but to be able to do that she has to be given a human host that knows the whereabouts... She is challenged by her seeker (a soul that takes specific interest in her task because she wants that particular host for herself) to find the whereabouts and to stay loyal to her kind because the host might be to strong for her!! What the seeker doesn't expect is to be sympathetic to Melanie (her human host) and to defy all that she has ever known to find the rebels and help them.. After a long trek through the desert and several close encounters with her seekers madness she finds herself saved by Melanie's grandfather! He doesn't seem to care that 'Wanda' is in 'Mel's' body all he wants to do is take advantage of the fact that 'Wanda's' willing to help!! After several encounters with non to friendly humans that hate the idea of a 'worm' being among them she finds herself involved in a love triangle with Mel's boyfriend who is one of the non friendly humans and a sweet brother that goes against his brother just for 'Wanda' she falls in love and becomes part of the society... But then she realizes that they have betrayed her in the worst way possible they have been killing her brethren and now she doesn't know what do to do...
Melanie "Mel" Stryder is one of few "wild" humans remaining on earth after invasion. After "insertion" into a human body, alien souls erase the human occupant and establish a claim over the body and mind. Wanderer is a soul who has lived on eight different planets previously, with Mel being her ninth host body. Upon waking inside her new body, Wanderer is shocked by the power and vividness of human emotions, memories, and senses, and quickly learns that Melanie is not willing to give up the entirety of her mind.
A member of a species that takes over the minds of human bodies, Wanderer is unable to disregard his host's love for a man in hiding, a situation that forces both possessor and host to become unwilling allies.
Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. Our world has been invaded by an unseen enemy. Humans become hosts for these invaders, their minds taken over while their bodies remain intact and continue their lives apparently unchanged. Most of humanity has succumbed. When Melanie, one of the few remaining "wild" humans, is captured, she is certain it is her end. Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, was warned about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the glut of senses, the too vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind. Wanderer probes Melanie's thoughts, hoping to discover the whereabouts of the remaining human resistance. Instead, Melanie fills Wanderer's mind with visions of the man Melanie loves, a human who still lives in hiding named Jared. Unable to separate herself from her body's desires, Wanderer begins to yearn for a man she has been tasked with exposing. When outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off on a dangerous and uncertain search for the man they both love.
