Tana lives in a world where for the last decade, the rapid spread of vampirism has led to the erection of Coldtowns, quarantined ghettos for vampires and infected "cold" humans, in cities across the country. When Tana wakes up after an ordinary party to find all the other guests dead except for her ex-boyfriend Aiden and a stranger, a vampire named Gavriel chained up in the guest bedroom, she knows what she has to do. Uncertain if she is infected herself or not, the trio heads to the nearest Coldtown, where Tana is determined to save herself and her friends. Holly Black has a talent for precise language, exquisite description, and characters that leap off the page, and this book is no exception. She's also really good at making her nonhuman characters both relatable and very inhuman. There was a bit much gore for my taste, but the writing was phenomenally beautiful.
