This novel, set in the current-day USA, is satirical, but ultimately less of a parody than some of Shteyngart's previous work. He has such "good" material to work with (a failing hedge fund manager and his wife contending with parenting an imperfect child in Manhattan in the age of Trump), that he doesn't have to push the envelope much. When faced with whether to laugh or to cry, Shteyngart is able to offer laughs, and bless him for it. It's a very well-observed, and very funny novel.
