Canales is, according to the about-the-author page, well-known for her short stories. Reading this book, I could see why. A string of loosely-connected narratives (getting more closely connected as the book goes on) follow a young girl growing up in a Texas barrio until she graduates from a pre-Ivy League prep school to which she received a scholarship. The sense of place is incredible; the stories heartwarming. But it’s very obvious that this is the first attempt at novel form by someone used to writing short stories, and it teeters uneasily between the genres.
