This is an intimate book full to the brim with big themes and ideas. British life and culture; World War II history; the class divide; the psychology of abuse; the psychology of love; hidden romance and depression; and more. All from the perspective of one little girl discovering it all in most unexpected ways, told through her very authentic and real voice. It's impossible not to admire and pull for Ada. It's a moving and arresting story.
